Here are some resources I found useful for assisting me in adopting a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle. As always I encourage you to do your research and to educate yourself.
The China Study by T. Colin Campbell. T. Colin Campbell is a hero and has been involved is some very prestigious studies that have catalogued diet and our long term health. He has put those studies into this book. The China Study is awesome! And seriously backed by science.
Thrive by Brendan Brazier. Brendan Brazier is a former professional Ironman triathlete and formulator of the very successful Vega brand. In Thrive Brendan delves deep into plant-based nutrition and how it can improve athletic performance, lower stress, and reduce our biological debt. This book contains some very delicious and simple recipes that can change your life.
All things by Rich Roll, including Finding Ultra by Rich Roll. In Finding Ultra Rich chronicles his life from a competitive swimmer, to a fast-flying alcoholic lawyer, to then, what he calls, "cheeseburger heaven," and finally to an ultra-endurance athlete on a plant-based diet. Truly inspirational!
The Plantpower Way by Rich Roll and Julie Piatt is the culmination of plant cooking in the Roll household. This book is awesome as it contains recipes for those who are looking to transform, perform, and explore their spirituality. Rich and Julie also share their experiences with raising four kids on this lifestyle. Stunning photography and delicious recipes.
And finally--from Mr Roll that is--The Rich Roll Podcast. On the show Rich interviews the best and brightest from all walks of life including nutrition, sports performance, spirituality, long-term health and wellness, entrepreneurship, and much more. Really, this is a great way to get informed or to get a snapshot of a specific topic. It's all free, and great for driving and long training rides!
Documentaries, most of which are on Netflix.
Cowspiracy follows the journey of Kip Anderson as he attempts to unveil the number one cause of our decaying planet: animal agriculture.
Forks Over Knives shows how two elite doctors, T. Colin Campbell and Caldwell Esselstyn, discover that plant-based nutrition can prevent and reverse many of our leading causes of death. The film also shows, firsthand, the incredible transformative power plant-based nutrition has on our health.
Food Choices is great because it covers many topics and misnomers relating to plant-based nutrition. Long term health, the environment, athletic performance are all covered in this film, as well as myths behind the Atkins Diet, the Paleo diet, and the hunter-gather phenom.
I will add to this blog as I continue to read and learn more about health and nutrition. I hope this helps in starting your plant-based lifestyle. I am also trying to add more and more of my favourite recipes to my food page :) Enjoy. Good food is good mood!
